I have personally just returned from memorable trip to Latin America and in this list, I delve into the continent’s enchanting wonders – from the dazzling mountain landscapes to manmade wonders.

Rainbow Mountain in Peru

Rainbow Mountain in Peru, also known as Vinicunca, is a stunning geological wonder that is characterized by its vibrant colors, formed by the presence of various minerals and sedimentary layers.

The unique palette of colors displayed on the mountain ranges from deep crimson to bright turquoise, making it a photographer’s dream. Its scenic beauty and peculiar natural formation have made Rainbow Mountain one of the most visually striking sites in Peru.

Located in the Andean highlands of the Cusco region, at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters above sea level, this instagram-worthy destination entails a challenging hike for adventure-seekers. Discovered only in 2015, it has quickly become one of the must-sees in the Cusco region.

Unknown to many, there are actually a number of Rainbow mountains in the area. The most iconic one is Vinicunca. An alternative ranbow mountain which is slightly easier to get to is Palccoyo.

Machu Picchu

This is one spot in South America that requires no introduction. Machu Picchu, also known as the “Lost City of the Incas,” is a 15th-century Inca citadel nestled high in the Andes Mountains of Peru.

Machu Picchu holds immense cultural significance as a testament to the ingenuity, creativity, and organization of the Inca civilization. This UNESCO World Heritage Site continually inspires awe and curiosity.

The site also has spiritual importance for the local Quechua people. It’s believed that the location was chosen due to its proximity to sacred mountains, or apus, which serve as protectors and sources of spiritual energy.

Although it is by no means the only Inca site in Peru, it is undoubtedly the most popular due to its incredibly scenic location. Tourism is a significant aspect of Machu Picchu’s modern-day relevance.

How to get there: The city of Cusco serves as the gateway to Macchu Pichu and is a 1.5 hour flight from Peru’s capital, Lima. From Cusco, a journey to Machu Picchu involves a bus and train ride and another bus ride. Visitors can also choose to do a 2-day hike via the Inca Trail. Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls, located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, is a magnificent and expansive waterfall system. It spans approximately 1.7 miles (2.7 km) in width, giving it the title of the largest waterfall system in the world. These falls are the result of the convergence of the Iguazu River and the Parana River. The breathtaking sight of the falls is enhanced by the presence of numerous small islands scattered along the system.

In addition, the rich ecosystem around Iguazu Falls also hosts a diverse range of flora and fauna. This subtropical forest is home to several endangered species of birds, mammals and reptiles. Some noteworthy animals to look out for include capybaras, howler monkeys and jaguars.

How to get there: As the falls lies between three countries, you can choose to either fly to the Argentine or Brazilian side to see it. The Foz do Iguacu Airport at the Brazilian side has more connectivity, hosting international flights from elsewhere in South America as well.

Cusco

Cusco, situated in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, is a city steeped in history and vibrant local culture. Once the capital of the Inca Empire, it offers a blend of ancient architecture, lively streets, and modern-day attractions. Highlights include the Cusco Cathedral. Built in the 16th century with stones from an ancient Inca ruin, it houses several important paintings and relics. The San Blas Neighborhood is a trendy area with cafes, bars, artisans, workshops and a beautiful Baroque church.

Locals gather at Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, the main square which serves as a hub for social and cultural activities. If you are there on a Sunday, you can see locals from the rural areas descending there with their bright traditional costumes selling knitwear or posing with tourists.

Tip: Cusco is located 3,350 meters above sea level. It is best to spend a day or two without intense activity after arriving in the city.

Though a visit to Cusco is often viewed as a gateway to Machu Picchu, the city itself offers a myriad of unforgettable experiences, with its rich heritage and vibrant local culture not to be missed.

How to get there: Cusco is a 1.5 hour flight from Lima, Peru’s capital. There are also international flights to Chile, Colombia and Bolivia. Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, also known as the “Cidade Maravilhosa” or the Marvelous City, is a vibrant city in Brazil known for its stunning landscapes, beautiful beaches, and lively culture. It boasts a perfect blend of natural beauty and urban charm, making it a popular tourist destination.

Its landmarks need no introduction. The iconic Christ the Redeemer statue stands tall atop the Corcovado Mountain, overlooking the city. It is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Sugarloaf Mountain, another significant landmark, offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Rio de Janeiro. It is accessible by a cable car and is also a popular destination for rock climbing and hiking enthusiasts.

For beach buffs, Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches are tourist favorites. The two beaches are known for their golden sands, vibrant atmosphere and picturesque surroundings. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities such as sunbathing, swimming, and surfing.

Salar de Uyuni

Salar de Uyuni, located in Bolivia, is the world’s largest salt flat, spanning over 10,582 square kilometers. The salt flat’s formation dates back to the evaporation of several prehistoric lakes, primarily Lake Minchin. As the lake gradually evaporated, it left behind a thick salt crust. Over time, the crust hardened and formed the vast, white expanse that is Salar de Uyuni today.

It is very popular with tourists due to its mirror effect. During the rainy season, water accumulates on the salt flat’s surface, creating a thin layer that reflects the sky above. This creates an awe-inspiring illusion of walking on the clouds.

Other highlights include Cacti Island or Incahuasi Island, this rocky, cacti-covered island is situated in the middle of the salt flat. It offers an interesting contrast to the surrounding white landscape and is home to ancient cacti weighing several tons and growing as tall as 12 meters.

How to get there: The city of Uyuni serves as the gateway to the Salt Flats. The city is connected to Bolivia’s capital La Paz from where there are direct flights to Lima, Peru or Bogota, Colombia.

They offer tourists an opportunity to experience the unique culture and environment of Salar de Uyuni.
