Gram, Japan’s Fluffy Souffle Pancakes, in VivoCity, Singapore

Gram, the popular pancake place in Japan, is now in Singapore. The casual restaurant is officially opening in VivoCity on the 16th of June 2019 and will feature the famous wobbly stacked pancakes which originated in Osaka, Japan. A couple of days prior to opening, I was invited to check out the offerings at Gram. Having visited the main store previously during a trip to Japan, I was curious to see how the Singapore outlet compares. I have to say that when it comes to the thick souffle pancakes, the Singapore version compares favorably against the Osaka one. Gram Cafe & Pancakes in Singapore will serve both dessert and savory pancakes when it opens it doors.

The space, which is located in Level 2 of Vivocity, near the Golden Village cinema and beside Secret Recipe, is tiny. As such, I think  longqueues can easily form here. There are two entrances – one from the mall interior and another one from the outdoor central section of Vivo.

The popular fluffy souffle pancakes are officially termed as Premium Pancakes (S$17.90) and comes in a serving of three pancakes stacked on top of one another. They are soft and airy when served and I didn’t even have to put the accompanying butter (the whipped cream and maple syrup were sufficient) to make it taste good. The inside dissolved almost immediately once devoured. I was advised to eat the premium pancakes within 10 minutes from serving as it gets soggy very fast. Once Gram officially opens to the public, the premium pancakes will be served only three times a day with a limit of 30 servings each time. The three timings are: 11AM, 3PM and 6PM – roughly similar to my experience in Japan!

Gram will offer a number of different types of pancakes, including the standard kinds. I only got to try the premium pancakes during my visit to the outlet in Japan but another touted specialty in Singapore is the Rich Tiramisu Pancake (S$15.90). It’s a creamy concoction made with espresso-soaked pancakes with layers of rich mascarpone tiramisu cream and dusted with cocoa powder. To finish it off, you’ll find a crown of milk chocolate on top of the pancakes. Personally, I found this pancake extremely rich and creamy. I think I will just stick to the premium souffle pancakes.

Aside from sweet or “dessert” pancakes, Gram will also have the more savory types of pancakes so yeah, it’s possible to make a meal out of one’s dining experience here. Among the savories, I tried the Chili Bean Pancakes (S$18.90). Here, savory pancakes are topped with chili beans sauce and melted cheddar. It also comes with a side of sausage, potato and luscious salad greens. While I prefer to have my pancakes sweet and milky, I appreciated the dressing used in this savory version.

For something that is NOT pancake, Gram has the French Toast of Chocolate Banana (S$12.90), a classic Danish French toast topped with cream interspersed with vanilla ice cream, fresh bananas and a copious amount of chocolate sauce.

Gram’s anticipated opening on the 16th of June will see the outlet debut with a sizeable menu. That said, there are also plans to expand the offerings further by offering the likes of Japanese curry pancakes, etc in the future to satisfy the local palate.
