13 Best Christmas Turkey 2023 in Singapore for Takeaway and Delivery

December 10, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

No holiday feast is complete without a large platter of turkey for the family. Especially in this time of year when Christmas gatherings and home parties are in full swing, you may wish to order a roasted turkey to feed guests visiting your home for the holidays.

With the past year’s recurring theme of inflation, I am surprisingly seeing many hotels and restaurants keep turkey prices stable this year. I am even seeing a few vendors offering their turkeys at slightly lower prices, albeit with fewer side dishes to go along with the bird.

Whether it is a Christmas party with friends or an intimate holiday dinner with family, check out this selection of turkeys for 2023. Many of these vendors deliver as well.

Review: Lo Quay – Not the Vietnamese Cuisine That Most Would Imagine

December 8, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

In a city where there are plenty of Vietnamese restaurants to choose from, Lo Quay makes its debut with a re-imagination of the Southeast Asian cuisine. Helmed by Chef Quynh Brown who previously came from contemporary izakaya Zuma, Lo Quay means “discover” and is her invitation to guests to explore her thoughtful, bold reinterpretation of Vietnamese cuisine. Here, the country’s vibrant and familiar flavors are recast with contemporary techniques.

The first thing I noticed when I entered the ground floor shophouse unit that Lo Quay occupies are the number of artworks hanging on the wall. Many of them depict memories that Chef Quynh had growing up in Saigon and practicing rooftop farming with her grandfather during a challenging time in the country. These art prints were actually made using AI, although the extremely vivid and lifelike details made me question that.

December 4, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Desserts are an essential part of any festive dinner table and no other sweet treat is more evocative of the Christmas season than log cakes. Dessert chefs are known to be very competitive by rolling out highly creative pastries each year. It might still be quite early for Christmas but a few bakers in Singapore have already started rolling out their log cake selections for 2023. Without further ado, here is the list for the year – I will update it as and when more brands come online with their offerings.

NEW: Shoukouwa Shinjidai – Spin-Off of Two Michelin-Starred Shoukouwa & Saint Pierre in Conrad Singapore Orchard

December 1, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

What do you get when you combine the sensibilities of 2 Two Michelin-starred restaurants? Newly opened Shoukouwa Shinjidai, inside the ground level of Conrad Singapore Orchard, is a creative collaboration between Chefs Emmanuel Stroobant and Kazumine Nishida, both Two Michelin-starred chefs of Saint Pierre and Shoukouwa respectively.

The 13-seater venue is named Shoukouwa Shinjidai, with Shinjidai 新時代 referring to a new era. It aims to describe the kaiseki-inspired cuisine with an innovative edge. Rather than a straightforward Japanese kaiseki restaurant, you’ll find western presentation methods as well.

Shoukouwa Shinjidai is open for both lunch and dinner. They offer the 10-course Kaze (S$250) or 12-course Mio (S$380) for lunch and the 12-course Mio (S$380) and 14-course Yume (S$480) for dinner. Each course here is quirkily named after a song – some which are part of the restaurant’s playlist as well.

NEW: Takahashi Restaurant Singapore – Stunning Omakase Restaurant in Mohamed Sultan

November 26, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Another new omakase restaurant has opened in Singapore, and this time it is Takahashi – the famed restaurant in Tokyo’s Ginza district. The Singapore outlet, which is located in Mohamed Sultan Road, is the brand’s first international outpost.

The Singapore outlet is helmed by Chef Rinto Sasagawa who has worked under Chef Jun Takahashi for a number of years.

The interiors of Takahashi is perhaps one of the most zen that I have encountered in Singapore. With rental prices at a premium in the Lion City, most omakase restaurants have little space aside from the counter, chef’s preparation area, kitchen and perhaps one small private dining room. In Takahashi however, they even have a miniature zen garden filled with sand, rocks, bamboo and even a small fountain. It feels absolutely mesmerizing to see this inside a restaurant!

For this occasion, I tried their Shugetsu dinner set which goes for S$320 which includes 9 courses plus 6 types of nigiri. They also have lunch sets available starting from S$180.

Succulent Christmas Ham 2023 in Singapore With Takeaway & Delivery For Your Festive Feasting

November 4, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Along with the log cake and turkey, the festive ham is another must-have dish during Christmas. The huge chunk – usually pork but may also be chicken or turkey – is either wet or dry cured and may or may not be smoked. There are many variations of ham available and all are generally considered acceptable for Christmas. There have also been deviations from the original honey-glazed hams. Some restaurants and hotels have rolled out hams with a local flair for instance, and I’ve aimed to list some of the noteworthy ones down below.

NEW: Imbue Restaurant in Keong Saik Road – Course by Course Guide at Chef Lee Boon Seng’s Contemporary European Restaurant with Strong Asian Influences

November 3, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Rounding up the last quarter of the year, we have new restaurant Imbue opening in Keong Saik Road. A concept by 1855 F&B (the same group behind Born, Path, The Spot, etc), Imbue is helmed by Chef Lee Boon Seng who also happens to be the Executive Chef of The Spot. At Imbue, Chef Boon Seng is taking on the role of chef-owner.

Imbue is a 38-seater modern Asian-European restaurant. Like other 1855 F&B concepts, this is a sauce-centric venue where condiments help to elevate the flavors and potential of each dish.

Taste Chef Lee’s best creations across two tasting menus: The 8-course Simmer Menu ($198++ per person) and 5-course Infuse Menu ($158++ per person). During my visit to Imbue, I got to try the 8-course menu.

Underrated Omakase Places in Singapore You Might Have Never Heard Of

October 17, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Most Singapore residents love a good omakase and the proliferation of venues serving this multi-course Japanese meal attests to that. When it comes to great omakase places, restaurants like Shinji, Ki-sho and Sushi Jiro easily come to mind. For those on a budget and looking for cheap omakase options on the other hand, names like Ryo Sushi and Teppei often pop up.

I have tried my fair share of omakase in Singapore and after some time, I realized you don’t really need to go to those familiar names to enjoy a great meal. Without further ado, I present some of my favorite restaurants which are relatively under-the-radar. Some are new, others have been around for ages but they are all not as popular as the big names despite having great propositions in their own right.
